Joan Arai papers, ca. 1969-1977.

Correspondence, memos, reports, minutes, financial records, press releases, and topical files of Joan Arai, a Chicago education activist and community leader. Materials relate primarily to her work as an administrator with the Montrose Urban Progress Center (MUPC) and the Uptown Chicago Commission (UCC), a community organization to promote communication and action for residents, civic and community organizations, institutions, and businesses in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago (Ill.). Also present are reports, proposals, and memoranda from the local Model Cities Program, a cooperative program of federal, state, and local government that assisted neighborhood planning to organize block clubs, foster economic development plans, and promote projects to improve housing, education, transportation, and health and medical facilities in the community.
